PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
What is the refusal to follow instructions or behave in accordance with a law, rule, or order regardless if it is inferred, conditional, corporeal, or compulsory, whether by an outside entity or self imposed?

This project uses the gallery space as a laboratory within which the most basic definition of disobedience is investigated through the juxtaposition of various moments in history, scientific discovery, and the development of technology in an effort to yield a greater understanding of humankind and what role disobedience may have played in its development. The elements presented are a 1930's Diebold safe with a magnetically mounted, computer driven safe dialer that physically cycles through every possible combination to unlock the safe, an edition of hydroponic cabinets containing tomatoes plants, a tableau dedicated to the lone man who confronted a column of tanks after the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, both a video showing Emery Blackwell, a man with cerebral palsy, riding a custom made recumbent trike and the actual bike, and an in-situ reprographics center equipped with computers, printers, pre-digital graphic layout tools and materials, and photocopier, as well as shelves and walls filled with reproductions of historic posters, pamphlets, and other printed materials that is open to the public for the production of limited editions of printed materials. Tying these very disparate elements together is a singular question posted in vinyl on the walls and windows of the gallery in 8 prominent locations:

What is the refusal to follow instructions or behave in accordance with a law, rule, or order regardless if it is inferred, conditional, corporeal, or compulsory, whether by an outside entity or self imposed?
